Refraction, eye shape: The ophthalmologist (you are seeing an ophthalmologist for your precious eyes-right?), will measure the eye power (refraction), determine the curvature of the front of the eye, and test whether the eye can safely wear a lens (eye illness, dryness, previous disease). Then a contact lens can be calculated and prescribed.

What do eye doctors do for an eye contact exam and does it hurt at all?

No it doesn't hurt: Optometrists will check how well you see and then help you try on different types of contacts till you find one that suits you best. Contacts mostly hurt if there is dirt on them, you have an eye infection, or you put it in the wrong way.
A 50-year-old member asked:

Do eye doctors only do eye exams? Do they treat infections?

Of course!: An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor (md or od) and a surgeon. We treat everything from glasses to injury, infection, cataracts, retinal detachments etc. Much more than just infections.
