Stress gastritis: The stomach lining is protected by a mucous gel layer that's regulated by prostaglandins, nitric oxide, certain proteins, and vagus nerve stimulation. Normally, stomach acid secreted by the stomach's parietal cells does not erode into this lining. But severe stress may disrupt the neural tone such that the gel layer breaks down -- and then acid reaches, inflames, and destroys the stomach lining.
