See below: Serum glucose is how much glucose (a type of sugar) is present in your blood at the exact minute your blood was drawn. Hga1c is different. It actually looks at how much sugar is stuck to your blood cells and represents an "average" of how high your blood sugar has been every day for the last 3 months.

A1c is average: The hemoglobin a1c is an average of your glucose over the prior 3 months or so. There are tables online that let you convert the % of glycosylated hemoglobin to what your avg glucose has been.
