A member asked:

Why do they do surgical puncturing of the pleura?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Covers the lung: The pleura is a thin lining of the chest wall and lung. The pleura must be opened if you want to operate on the lung or any structure inside the chest. Since it covers the chest wall the pleura must be punctured if you want to put a needle into the chest to sample fluid or tissue.
