One: One operation to repair the palate, but a second operation usually between 6-8 years old to repair the gum line if the cleft goes there.

1 stage: 2 main areas are the timing of surgery and the operative technique. The earlier the cleft closed, the better chance the child will speak normally. Csag, 1998, sommerlad 1997, shows that both facial growth and good speech can both be achieved by closure technique in a single stage before 1 yr of age, providing dissection and raw areas (which usually are left to epithelialize) are kept to minimum.
