A member asked:

What happens when platelet count is extremely low? do you just start bleeding?

Yes: Especially from the gums. Women can also have very heavy periods, and blood may appear in the urine or stool. Simple cuts bleed too long. Bruising is very easy and can be severe.

Thrombocytopenia: The platelet (plt) count is normally 150-400 (thousand). Major surgery is possible if the PLT count is over 100. Minor procedures are usually possible if the PLT count is greater than 50. You see increased bruising and mild spontaneous bleeding when plts are around 30. Major bleeding without provocation occurs when plts are less than 10 or so, which is why PLT transfusions are given at this level.
