Lactic Acid: Its what builds up when muscle tissue starts to make energy anaerobicaly. As you get more fit, your body's capacity to utilize oxygen will increase, and you will build up less Lactic Acid at the same level of exertion. Keep increasing your fitness level and the soreness will be harder and harder to achieve.
