What is a urinary tract infection? what exactly is infected?

Bacteria multiplying: Anywhere in the urinary tract from kidney to urethra. Bacteria are actually multiplying by dividing in the urine, usually in the bladder, after gaining access from the urethra. Bacteria can attach to the lining of of the urinary tract and invade so that urethra, bladder, ureter or kidney tissues can become infected.
