Painless or painful: There are many types of thyroiditis ranging from acute and subacute (painful) to chronic, or lymphocytic (hashimoto's) thyroiditis (painless. Even subacute thyroiditis may on occasion be painless.

Which Type?: There are different varieties of thyroiditis - some may present with only an enlarged thyroid (or not). The function of the gland may be either overactive, underactive, or normal. Usually not painful, but there are acute and subacute types which may cause discomfort.
