What are the causes of supraventricular tachycardia?

Hardening of the arteries, heart failure, thyroid disease, pneumonia, chronic lung disease, pulmonary embolism, pericarditis, stress, substance abuse, smoking and/or too much caffeine could all cause supraventricular tachycardia.

Short circuit: Classic svt (supraventricular tachycardia) also known as av nodal reentrant tachycardia, is a condition in which there is an extra "wire" connecting the top and bottom parts of the heart, leading to "short circuits" and intermittent rapid heart rhythms. However, svt can also be used to describe any fast heart rhythm coming from the top part of the heart. These can be normal or abnormal rhythms.

Multipe reasons: Usually one is born with an extra 'circuit' or a propensity to have rapid firing in the upper chambers of the heart. Svt can in some cases be exacerbated by activity, stress, stimulants etc.
