A member asked:

Is it risky for osteoporotic pt with old spinal rods to take nerve conduction study? could you jerk and fracture at ends of rods? how to minimize?

Probably not: I am certainly no expert in this field, but does not seem likely.

No: No chance of that. The amount of muscle jerking is not generally more vigourous that the muscle contractions that you use in everyday life. They feel a little weird but are not damaging in any way. Nerve conduction studies are done on the extremities and not in the spinal area.

No fracture risk: Emg (electromyography) and nerve conduction studies do not carry any additional risk for a patient with osteoporosis or for a person with hardware in the spine. There is more fracture risk getting on and off the exam table and for getting in and out of your car for your appointment than for the studies themselves. Rest assured!
