Yes...: Throat swelling can occur due to an allergic reaction which can happen suddenly, with no prior warning. If this happens, the person needs to get to an er for immediate treatment. There's also a condition called epiglottis which results in swelling in the throat due to an infection. This also requires going to the er for immediate treatment. These are life-threatening conditions.

Take seriously: Throat swelling can be an acute medical emergency if it affects your airway (ability to breath). There can be multiple causes from allergy to enzyme defect (hereditary angioedema) to unknown (idiopathic). You should have an Epinephrine autoinjector and see an allergist.
