A 37-year-old member asked:

how long does it take for ex-lax to work for bm?

8 hours: Ex-lax usually takes up to 8 hours to work. You need fiber to keep regular. Also increasing your water intake helps. High fat and processed foods can contribute to constipation.

A 30-year-old member asked:

Can I use expired ex-lax ultra pills or get new ones?

Probably safe.: Expiration dates for oral meds are usually very conservative and have to do with marketing, product cycling and regulatory issues than potency. As long as they were stored under reasonable conditions should be good for many months beyond expiration.

A 37-year-old member asked:

Dont laugh but does exlax abuse cause any minor/serious side effects?

Yes: Laxative abuse can result in melanosis coli. Essentially cells die from wear and tear. When they die they spill out a cellular pigment that stains the colon. It's best you find out what is causing chronic constipation before you use a laxative long term. You don't want to mask an underlying problem.

A member asked about a 95-year-old female:

Is exlax safe for senior citizens?

1 doctor answer2 doctors weighed in
Dr. Andrew Seibert
Gastroenterology 35 years experience
Yes, used sparingly.: used only on occasions, Exlax can be used safely by senior citizens. A better plan is to increase the amount of fiber in the diet, and perhaps even to use fiber supplements on a daily basis, if necessary. In addition, increasing the amount of fluid intake is important. if there are still problems with constipation after doing the above, then Ex-Lax, used rarely, is acceptable. Good luck.
