See below: The posterior fontanel closes first, at latest by the age of 8 weeks in a full-term baby. The anterior fontanel closes at 18 months of age on the average but it can close normally as early as 9 months. If fontanels close too early or too late, that may be a sign of a problem. The "fontanel" is a "soft spot" of the skull.

?? Close ??: The soft spots are quite variable & may grow larger before becoming smaller & are seldom distinct after 9-12 mo.The skull itself is composed by about 17 separate growth centers that seemingly push away from each other until the kid reaches 9-10 yrs when the adult skull size is reached.Kids seldom do any damage to the skull by their simple movements. A trauma that knocks them out is worth an eval.
