Diet and exercise: A healthy lifestyle can delay any progression of heart disease. Controlling blood pressure helps. Sometimes, regardless of efforts mitral insufficiency can progress.

Usually cannot: Mitral valve disease is typically progressive regardless of what you do. What you can do is to live a heart healthy life style so that if you do need to have surgery at some point you decrease the chance that there would be anything else wrong with the heart. Close monitoring by your cardiologist is important.
