How can lighting fireplaces during the holidays be dangerous?

Creosote buildup: Some chimneys will accumulate creosote, a product of wood burning that can clog part of the air column. Under some conditions the material will catch fire within the chimney & extend to the house. Periodic maintenance will avert this problem.
