Allergy: When you are allergic to one of the ingredients of the cosmetic in question, you will develop contact dermatitis. Unfortunately it is frequently difficult to identify the specific ingredient that is causing the problem, since cosmetic companies often keep their formulas secret. A dermatologist can help you do it, though, with patch testing.

A 44-year-old member asked:
What are the most common substances that cause allergic contact dermatitis?

Nickel: Nickel allergy is one of the most common substances. It is found in costume jewelry, eyeglass frames, snaps etc. Another group of allergens are the preservatives and fragrances used in cosmetics. Some of the chemicals used in latex products such as gloves, balloons, catheters etc. Can cause problems. They are the additives in the products not usually the latex itself.
