Stepwise: In short, after anesthesia is induced, the chest is opened and in some cases, the heart and lungs are bypassed (some are not done this way). Then arteries or veins are used/harvested to bypass heart blockages and then the chest is then closed and anesthesia is reversed. It is a bit more complicated, but this is the best brief answer i can give.

See below: Bypass surgery is a method of increasing blood flow to areas of the heart with arterial blockages. It's essentially plumbing. We put in new pipe to go around the blocks. We use veins and arteries from other parts of the body. We connect them before the blockage and then again after the blockage. Often we will use vein from the leg and an artery from the underside of the breast bone (best).
