Yes: High cholesterol (mainly the ldl) is a risk factor for development of coronary artery disease. It is most important in patients with other "risk factors" like diabetes, smoking, hypertension, family history & obesity.

When combined with..: Cholesterol clearly plays a role in the development of cardiovascular disease but its role has been exaggerated. Half of those with heart disease do not have high cholesterol & many with high cholesterol do not get heart disease. The biggest cause is inflammation.
