Immobilzation: For fractures to heal it needs to be immobilized whether it done externally or internally; the duration varies from fracture to fracture.

Depends on type: Some fractures are treated with a cast is they are nondisplaced (not shifted out of position.) when fractures are displaced (shifted out of normal position) they often require surgery in order to put the bones back in the proper alignment.
