Diastolic HF: If by characteristics you mean symptoms, the symptoms of diastolic heart failure otherwise known as heart failure with preserved left ventricular function, are difficult to distinguish from those of heart failure due to poor cardiac function. Shortness of breath is probably the most common symptom with swelling of the legs and abdomen being other symptoms.

Shortness of breath: Most commonly, shortness of breath with exertion. In advanced cases, you may have leg swelling and at times, people with very high blood pressure may have chest pains as well.
