Messenger proteins: These proteins are released by nerve endings in the intestines. They can cause the muscle walls of organs and blood vessels to relax . For example, they help the muscle band in the lower esophagus to open up and pass food into the stomach, and can increase blood flow in the intestines. They also stimulate secretions. Tumors that produce large amounts of vip cause severe diarrhea.
