what all causes oral health problems in older adults?

3 doctor answers5 doctors weighed in
Dr. Nela Cordero
Pediatrics 54 years experience
ORAL PROBLEMS: Older people have teeth problems. Most of them have dentures or no teeth at all. Some cannot afford to go to the dentist that's why they end up with oral health problems.
Dr. Jake Richards
Dentistry 12 years experience
Lack of hygiene: Most common things that i see, poor oral hygiene, infrequent visits to the dentist, poor dietary habits such as eating habits, soda, coffee with sweateners, (don't sip sugar drinks for a long time, drink and be done), timing of sugar intake. A lot of times parents neglect themselves for their children which can be problematic (though i understand). Of course tobacco products and alcohol add.

Health changes.: As you age, immunity becomes more precarious, many of us accumulate health conditions and or medications that slow healing. A lifetime of wear & tear on your oral tissues (teeth & gums) can also leave you more vulnerable to decay and gum disease. Details are specific to every individual and it is wise to consult with both your dentist and you pcp to manage specific risks as they relate to you.

Can I start feeding adult foods to my 8-month old?

Dr. Scott J. Wolfson
Pediatrics 22 years experience
Yes: If your baby is interested in table foods mash the food to a consistency that your baby can handle and go for it. Watch out for choking hazards. I generally do not introduce whole dairy products, whole eggs, strawberries, or fish until closer to 12 months and nut/peanut products or shellfish until 3 years but that can vary as well.

When should adolescents and adults get vaccinated against tetanus? Should they get vaccinated with td or tdap?

3 doctor answers7 doctors weighed in
Dr. Robert Kwok
Pediatrics 33 years experience
Tdap: Adolescents and adults needing a tetanus booster should get the tdap. Some age limits apply. If the person already got a tdap less than 10 years ago, was an adult at that time, and is now getting another tetanus vaccine, he can get the td, without pertussis protection. Future recommendations regarding td and tdap may change.

What can I do to address adult bedwetting?

1 doctor answer2 doctors weighed in
Dr. George Klauber
Specializes in Pediatric Urology
Consult urologist.: In mean time get urine tested for infection or presence of sugar (to rule out diabetes) stop drinking after dinner. Set an alrm for 2 - 3 hours after you go to bed. Try a bedwetting alarm (malem, wet stop, nytone etc). You might need medication such as desmopressin or a bladder anticholinergic such as oxybutinin er, detrol, vesicare (solifenacin) etc. However still consult with urologist.
