Dilation of blockage: Using a vascular catheter, not an open surgical procedure, a balloon is used to dilate a blocked artery. This may be followed by placing a stent, a metal alloy support scaffold, can be placed to hold the vessel open. Aggressive medications will be needed to control the risk factors that contributed to the blockage.
