What is the real difference between joint mobilization and joint manipulation, in the context of treating neck and lower back pain?

See below: There are probably no specific differences but there are various manipulation and mobilization techniques. Some come from chiropractic, some from osteopathic medicine and some from physical therapy. There are techniques that involve hi velocity, low amplitude thrusting techniques as well as more gentle manipulations like muscle energy technique and counterstrain technique. All seek to move joints.

Who is doing it: Joint mobilization is generally a patient driven treatment through exercise leading to joint motion while joint manipulation is having someone else place the joints through a range of motion.
