Low but severe.: 1/100-1/1, 000 women suffer any of the following after amniocentesis performed between 16-20 weeks: miscarriage, preterm birth, rupture of membranes, intrauterine infection, bleeding, injury to the fetus with the needle. Nowadays, non-invasive genetic testing is available (maternit21 by sequenom and others).
