OI: There are different forms of osteogenesis imperfecta. If a previous child, or an adult, has oi, the type will be usually be the same. Genetic counseling may be helpful is assessing the risk of recurrence and also deciding on what prenatal diagnostic technique should be used.

Invasive testing.: Amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling can retrieve fetal cells to be analyzed for dna mutations known to cause osteogenesis imperfecta. In the future non-invasive testing should become standard of care, but this technology to isolate cell-free fetal dna is in its nascent stages at this time.
