When do babies start connecting words to objects?

1 years: Babies start connecting words to objects after they turn 1 year of age. The connections seem inconsistent at first, especially since the baby can't talk yet. As the months goes by, the baby will start talking, and it will become obvious that he knows objects have names. His speech and language should improve as each month passes.

< 1 years: Infants begin to associate words with objects within the first months of life. The more the parents speak to their baby, the more language the baby will acquire. Most babies know who 'mama' is long before they can say the word. Receptive language can be enhanced by talking with your baby. Describe everthing that you say and do with your child and his receptive language will quickly grow.

< 1 years: Toward the later part of the first year, the connections in the brain that "label" things explode at an astounding rate. First things baby usually begins to understand are body parts - they'll point to nose, eyes, etc. Around one year of age they can begin very well to differentiate people - they will know "mommy" vs "daddy" vs other people. By shortly after first birthday, object names come in!
