1000: 1000 units of vitamin d daily through nutrition and/or multivitamin supplementation is adequate to avoid vitamin d deficiency with out running the risk of toxicity. Three to four portions of dairy daily should be adequate to supply calcium requirements.

400: It is not known exactly how much vitamin d is required for infants and children. A child gets some vitamin d from formula or other dairy products that are fortified with vitamin d. Breastmilk has little vitamin d. If a child's daily total of vitamin d from his diet is less than 200-300 units, then he should take a daily supplement of 200 units more vitamin d.
