A member asked:

Generally, are alcoholics as a group, more likely depressed people than the general population?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Yes: The incidence of depression in the general population is somewhere between 5-15%, depending on which study and what definition of depression. Several studies show that the incidence of depression in alcoholics is 15-25%, and the incidence of bipolar depression may be as high as 15% (about 2% in the general population.) A lot of the depression in alcoholics goes down with long-term sobriety.
