Misuse of word: No drug can CAUSE addiction. What some drugs CAN do is cause physical dependency, which is only one aspect of addiction. Gabapentin has abuse potential, as does every sedating drug, and there may even be a withdrawal syndrome. However, addiction requires MORE than physical dependency, and can occur in the absence of it. All anticonvulsants should always be tapered slowly over several weeks.
