Talk to MD, RPh: prescribers SHOULD know that pain patches may take 24-36 hours to get to levels that may relieve pain, and they also should advise you as to what you can take while the medication is kicking in. Usually, a low dose of a short-acting rapidly absorbed opiate like hydrocodone is reasonable for that short period of time, but I do not know your history, what other meds you are on etc., so can't advise.
