No Reason Why Not..: No reason why not as long as the baby has room to move around comfortably. And of course, he equipmnt needs to be absolutely safe.

Absolutely!: Assuming he's within the weight limit, and that there's no suffocation or choking hazards (eg. Thin blankets only; firm, non-conforming mattress cover; no stuffed animals) it's possibly the most convenient--and probably the most economical--sleeping arrangement for a new baby. And, while a bassinet tends to collects dust when it's outgrown, play-pens remain quite useful.

Playard may be ok: It is safe for a baby to sleep in a playard only if the playard was safe when new (meaning no safety recalls by the government or manufacturer), if the playard is set up correctly so that it cannot collapse, and if the parents frequently and thoroughly inspect the playard for wear-and-tear or other damage. Playards are made for part-time use, so they are not as sturdy as cribs are.
