Muscle cramp causes: Muscle cramps can be caused by many things - overuse/increased activity, muscle strain, being low on fluids, being low on electrolytes like potassium, calcium or magnesium. It is common for cramps to happen at night and those muscles to be sore the next day. If things like resting those muscles, heat, stretching or drinking more fluids don't help an examination can evaluate for local problems
