Quite reliable: In studies, the screening test detected 91.7% of people who were infected with HIV. A false negative screening test occurs with a very recent infection- a window period of several weeks may be present when antibodies to the virus have not reached a concentration that is visible by the test. Given a 10 year gap since the event, the test is reliable; false (-) test is unlikely.
