Irritation: A persistent cough can strain your intercostal muscles, giving you the sense that your lungs hurt, and can irritate your upper airway giving you a bloody taste in your throat. However, if you develop shortness of breath, wheezing, fevers or worsening cough, seek medical attention to rule out pneumonia or other infection. Take Care!
