ASAP: As soon as a woman thinks she is pregnant, she should see a doctor to schedule an early transvaginal ultrasound exam that will reveal if it is a singleton or multiple pregnancy, if there are heart tones, and if the pregnancy is inside the uterus or outside - which can be a potentially life-threatening condition.
