Nits viable: Not sure what you read, but assume all nits are viable. If you have an old nit in which the louse has hatched, as the hair grows out, the old nit's shell will remain. This is what the 1 inch rule is referring to. The old phrase " nit- picking" refers to the meticulous sectioning of hair and removing nits from the base of the hair at the scalp.
