How Old? How Low?: Keep in mind that 98.6 is simply an average temperature. A lower temp may be normal for him. A child who is very ill can have a low temperature which is ominous for a serious infection, but I am speaking of a listless child generally so sick he'd be in an ICU somewhere. Also keep in mind that many thermometers measure temps " outside" of the body, so they will read lower than a rectal temp
