Contusion..: A very bad contusion without a fracture could be painful but should not be severe. In some cases the X-rays done during the first 2-3 days after the injury can mask a fracture. Other possibility is an infection which is not uncommon to have after an injury. My advise is to see your doctor or go to an urgent care to have X-rays repeated and check for a possible infection.
