Not the spasms: The brain pathology that caused the infantile spasms confers a greater risk of autism, especially if it's tuberous sclerosis. A cause is found in > 75% of cases; almost half have a prenatal cause like abnormal development of the cortex of the brain, metabolic syndromes, or genetic syndromes. West syndrome itself can cause regression or arrest of development. 90% have first spasms before 12 mos.

Cart and horse: It is not infantile spasms that causes autism, it is the brain abnormalities that cause both. Definitions have changed over time. Many children who were previously labeled retarded, are not called on the autism spectrum.
