Yes: Definitely can make things worse. Effects of second hand smoke have been demonstrated. Nicotine is particularly harmful in plastic surgery where we need tissues to heal. Nicotine clamps down on blood vessels and prevents adequate blood flow to healing tissues. Wound complications are higher in patients with smoking exposure
