Multiple reasons: Being treated on the intensive care unit usually means a very serious and/ or life-threatening condition; it is often accompanied by changes in function of the organs, responsible for the breakdown (metabolism) of the drugs. There is often degree of metabolic encephalopathy that is currently poorly understood, unfortunately.. Having a detailed conversation with the doctors you trust might help.
