Dry skin: The most common reason for itchy skin is dry skin or xerosis. When the skin becomes dry, it itches and with scratching, it becomes red. Beyond dry skin, there are a number of skin conditions such as eczema (allergic, irritant, contact) that need to be considered. An allergist or dermatologist can help find the cause of the itching, so an effective treatment can be found.
