A member asked:

Why is it easier to give up beer than cigarettes?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

More addictive: The nicotine in cigarettes is simply more addictive than the alcohol in beer. Factors that add to this difference: nicotine acts faster and wears off faster (which tends to make a drug more addictive); nicotine directly affects certain neurotransmitters (chemical messengers in the brain), whereas the effect of alcohol is less specific. Both can be hard to give up though.
