Spacticity: If someone has an injury to the upper motor neurons such as a spinal cord injury if the neck or a stroke in the brain, the result is a generalized spasticity. The tone in their arms and legs can be dramatically increased. Oral muscle relaxants are usually tried first; if that does not work, Botox injections and back often pumps can be considerations.

How long do muscle spasms usually last?

Depends: That depends....A muscle spasm may last a few seconds in the face or arms, but could last much longer in the back. Usually though the spasm is short-lived but the resulting inflammation causes pain for much longer. Alternating hot/cold, staying hydrated, taking anti-inflammatory meds, stretching, and massage can all help.

A 27-year-old female asked:
I get a lot of muscle spasms. They tend to happen in one place for a while and then move somewhere else. What could be causing this?

Muscle spasm: Assuming these symptoms are the only ones you are having, consider metabolic imbalances like low calcium or magnesium. Also, certain medications like antipsychotics, anti-nausea agents (zofran for example), and medications used for gastroparesis like reglan (metoclopramide). They can cause cramping or spasms.
Poor hydration and in particular lack of electrolyte replacement could be involved.

Why do I have muscle spasms?

Dr. Randy Baker answered

Many causes: There are many possible causes of muscle spasms. Among the most common is magnesium deficiency; taking magnesium as taurate, glycinate or citrate may help. Stress (which can cause magnesium deficiency) is a cause. Potassium or calcium deficiency, structural imbalances, toxic chemicals & medication side effects can also be causes. Stretching, relaxation techniques & massage may be help. See comment.

Unfortunately, HealthTap doesn't give me enough space to answer some questions thoroughly, but I can elaborate a bit more here. I appreciate your asking "why do I have" instead of "how to treat," as knowing why is essential to finding the optimal treatment. A good resource for more information can be found at http://www.nativeremedies.com/ailment/muscle-spasms-and-twitches.html#question3 Good luck!

Painful: Your muscles "spasm" when either the signal to them is interrupted; they are asked to do something they do not want to do, or they are overworked. It is their way of telling you that they need to rest; and they need attention.
