A 40-year-old member asked:

Why aren't athletes allowed to take steroids?

Dr. Charles Turck
Pharmacology 17 years experience
Complicated: The word "steroid" is confusing to many, as there are two classes of drugs: corticosteroids and anabolic steroids. Atheletes may not take the *anabolic* kind because it gives them an unfair competitive advantage in building their muscles. *Corticosteroids*, on the other hand, are used to treat inflammation and may be used for everything from bursitis to asthma. Athletes may take those, no problem.

Why do some athletes take steroids?

Seroid Use: Steroids allow an athlete to become faster, stronger, bigger, etc., and that translated into being a "better" athlete. In some professional arenas of sport this is illegal, and others may not be. The bottom line is that steroid use for prolonged periods has potentially detrimental affects also.
