When our long bones increase in diameter, why does the thickness of the compact bone remain relatively constant?

Bone changes with aT: Our cortical or compact bone actually thins as we age and the diameter enlarges. This is a consequence of our bodies response to the forces around us along with the hormonal changes that happen as we age.
