C. diphtheriae: Corynebacterium diphtheriae is probably the answer. There is a toxin produced that helps form a thick leathery membrane in the airway. This can lead to death. Fortunately we have vaccines against it and anti-toxin. In the Western world, this disease is rare. Travelers to Asia and Africa though need to be aware and immunized.
