Soreness is common: But it depends on how severe. A bit of soreness, causing mild discomfort, isn't uncommon after a hard workout and/or if you are just starting to work out. But moderate to severe soreness suggests that you may have "overdone" things and possibly caused some less than desirable damage to your muscle or associated soft tissue.
